Monthly Horoscope:

Virgo (August 23-September 22)

August 2008

Ah, Virgo. It really is time to let all that baggage go. Clinging to toxic feelings, grudges and irrational fears may feel like a security blanket, or insurance against future hurt. In truth, that “blanket” is smothering you. Wherever your dreams feel muffled or unreachable, or people are at arm’s length? You’re cloaked in an old defense mechanism, formed in early childhood. And this month, it’s gonna feel more like a straitjacket.

August begins with a prompt wakeup call—in the form of a total New Moon eclipse in your twelfth house of endings, creativity and the subconscious mind. It’s time to heal, and there’s no more putting it off. The eclipse can deliver a jolt, like a “eureka” moment. Virgo, you like order and control, but that’s all going bye-bye now. It’s time to stop living like a separate being and surrender to your one-ness with humanity, the earth, and the divine forces of Life.

If you haven’t read Eckhart Tolle’s The Power of Now or A New Earth, get thee to the bookstore today. Why? Because you need to arm yourself for the funny, disorienting sensations (ranging from giddiness to total freakout) you’ll feel. When your elaborate structures for keeping people out come tumbling down like a house of cards, you’ll need to make sense of it. Oh my God, Virgo—you NEED people. Yes, you are a mere mortal like the rest of us. If you’ve been operating from ego (which, Tolle asserts, is what drives us to be better, faster and smarter than the pack, and is the ultimate source of our pain), there’s something SO much bigger available.

With five planets traipsing through Virgo all month, no doubt you sense that it’s time for something brand-new. Should you summon the courage to seek this nirvana, the feeling will be akin to floating in a warm paradise lagoon. Dive into the womblike waters of eternity, Virgo, where all is peaceful and there’s nothing to do. All you have to do is let go.

A beautiful surprise will be in store once you do that. Virgo, you’re an artist. We know—many of you are laughing at the notion. But seriously, we are all creative, no matter what form our creativity takes. This eclipse can bring a complete revolution to your creative expression. If you’re already involved in the arts, you’ll love what this eclipse ushers in. And if you’re not, it’s time to seize the nearest paintbrush or microphone, sign up for a dance class, or just do anything that forces you to operate from your heart and spirit instead of your mind. Virgo, that overthinking and overanalyzing s**t is bankrupt for you.

The twelfth house is very spiritual, and it also rules compassion. Have a little for yourself now, and let it connect you to a cause that really inspires you. Virgo, what stamp do you want to leave on the planet? Making a difference is a natural way of life for your sign, and you have a talent for it. You don’t have to start a non-profit or become the next Mother Theresa (though she IS a Virgo, too). Just find something bigger than yourself, and plug into that.

Your mind may scream, kick and wail when you try to let go of old pain, but clear yourself out. You might even consider trying a detox or cleanse, a yoga retreat, therapy, or guided meditation. Get those emotional toxins out—and any others you’re carrying around. By the end of August, you could be cleansed and ready for the Virgo New Moon, which is like your personal New Year. You should already feel like a new person by August 23, when the Sun enters Virgo.

On August 16, a Full Moon eclipse falls in your Virgo-ruled sixth house of health, fitness and service. It may be time to cut a few “takers” or energy vampires out of your life. Make yourself a priority, and start a new workout routine. You may need to moderate some of your giving, or stop participating in friendships and activities that are not a fair give-and-take.

Not to get all Zen master on you, but Virgos are the most “generous stingy people” we know. Generous in that you’d give the shirt off your back, divest your funds, and sell your firstborn to help a friend in need. Stingy in that you won’t give yourself totally to anyone. By overcompensating through material generosity, you can drain your soul. Enough already.

There will be transformations all over your life this month—in everything from your family dynamics to your living situation to your committed relationships. Out with the old, in with the new. Virgo, we know that change can be overwhelming, mainly because you hate to feel out of control. Just remember, eventually, all new changes become “normal.” Just give yourself the time and space, plan on feeling disoriented as you wander into new terrain, and eventually, you will master this, too.
