MONTHLY OVERVIEW:
December makes sense out of a roller coaster 2009. You often felt like a helium balloon when someone releases the air from it, zipping around in dizzying arcs. Emotional highs and lows came all year, and in July, a total solar eclipse in Cancer delivered a giant lesson in self-reliance. As the Hebrew sage Hillel said, "If I am not for myself, who will be?"

Depending on others to make your decisions became a bankrupt strategy. You were forced to trust yourself and stand for your convictions. On December 31st, a Cancer lunar eclipse brings a turning point in this chapter. You'll go into 2010 knowing who you are, and nobody can take that away from you. Reflect on the year and see how much you've grown in your self-awareness. The year ends with four planets, including transformational Pluto, in your relationship sector. You've made great shifts with other people, and unequal dynamics no longer have the same seductive pull. Owning your power feels liberating, not threatening, and you can allow others to get close. (As Hillel also said, "If I'm only for myself, what am I?")

In between moments of awakening, there's still work to be done. The Sun is in Sagittarius until December 21st, so clear out clutter, organize your workspace, and toss that wilting lettuce from your fridge. At the Gemini full moon on December 2nd, you may have one final showdown with an unhealthy person, or you may need to end a painful life chapter. Be sure to have adequate emotional support if this happens.

LOVE & ROMANCE:
Picky, picky. Venus is in Sagittarius, your critical sixth house this month, magnifying your mate's flaws and shortcomings. If you're tempted to go on a fixer-upper mission, be sure your sweetie is open to well-meaning suggestions. Otherwise, you could find yourself on the receiving end of your partner's complaint list. On December 2nd, the Gemini full moon could expose someone's true colors, or could elicit a huge emotional release. Surrender the illusion of control and just let events play out. You'll see the whole picture soon enough.

When Mercury goes retrograde (backward) in Capricorn on the 27th, you could hear from an ex-flame, or an old relationship quibble could come up. Chances are, closure was never reached during the first go-round. Tease out the hurt feelings and reservations until mid-January. Avoid making impulsive decisions.

After December 21st, the Sun enters Capricorn, your partnership sector. Take the time to rebalance your relationships. On New Year's Eve, the Cancer lunar eclipse draws a line in the sand: where are the boundaries between you and a partner? This eclipse opposes four planets in Capricorn, including transformational Pluto, churning up some of your most shadowy commitment fears. Examine them, and perhaps do a ritual to release any blocks. A helpful book is Your Heart's Desire: Instructions for Creating the Life You Really Want by Sonia Choquette.

MONEY & CAREER:
Before you take on another commitment, get your own life organized. It's hard to think straight with all the junk you've hoarded this year. For the first three weeks of December, plow through those piles and files and upgrade your organizational systems. Become BFFs with a label-maker (trust us—they're addictive), and make a pretty sanctuary out of all the places you do your best thinking. Don' be afraid to walk away from a situation where you feel unappreciated, especially near the December 2nd full moon. If someone is sabotaging or undermining you at work, this moon will help you confront the "haters."

After the 21st, you could be offered a contract or a chance to team up for business. A holiday party could turn into unexpected meeting of the minds. Take it slow, Cancer. The eclipse on December 31st could steer you in a whole new direction. Sometimes, you partner up with other people out of self-doubt or dependence. Learn 2009's lesson of emotional self-reliance. Know that you really can do it on your own.

HEALTH & FITNESS:
As luck would have it, the Sun is in Sagittarius, your health sector, until December 21st. Turns out holiday high season is a fortuitous time for fitness. What's a Crab to do? As a dyed in the wool foodie, you’ve never met a baked good or punchbowl you didn’t like. Between platefuls of party fare, throw some greenery into the mix: kale, Swiss chard, spinach. Gyms usually offer introductory specials around this time of year, so even if you don’t start your workouts until 2010, at least get a membership (especially at the December 16th Sagittarius new moon).  If you're making a big holiday dinner, use local ingredients and make veggies star players rather than overcooked afterthoughts. Roast brussel sprouts or bake butternut squash.

On December 1st, Uranus goes direct (forward) in Pisces, awakening your creativity and optimism. Think outside the box when writing your 2010 goals, and consider travel or mind-expanding seminars. If you’ve gotten caught up in pessimism and complaining, look at the big picture. No matter how crappy circumstances can be, you always have a choice in how you react to them. Tune into metaphysical or motivational audio downloads to keep you feeling empowered.
