Barack Obama (Leo)
As a charismatic Leo, Barack Obama has the power of passion on his side. Leo rules the heart, and much like our last Leo president Bill Clinton, he reached into many Americans' and made history. In 2009, expansive Jupiter will be in his seventh house of partnerships. His luck will come from having a strong team, especially one seasoned at foreign policy, since Jupiter rules international relations. He may need to control a "loose cannon" in the pack. He should also see himself as a "partner" of the American people, taking an "all for one and one for all" approach.

Obama's first presidential focus is (no surprise) the economy. Sober Saturn is in his second house of money until October 29, 2009. Saturn rules challenges and restrictions, and he's inherited quite a few. He'll need to be as conservative as possible here (easy on the bailouts!), and turn to experienced mentors and advisors. In spite of the crisis, Obama must choose his moves with caution.

On October 29, Saturn moves into diplomatic Libra. The economy may become another person's chief responsibility at that point, while he focuses on improving relations with foreign countries. His words will carry a lot of weight, since Saturn will be in his communication sector. "Talk is cheap" should be his motto from that point on. Obama has an Aquarius rising and Gemini moon, two Air signs that make him a great thinker and speaker, but could also put him in danger of glibness. He'll need to make sure his words and actions line up. This will be no time to make promises he can't back up with results.

In 2009, three eclipses fall in Leo, and its partner sign Aquarius. These are peak moments that could bring sudden events he'll need to address immediately. The first eclipse is on January 26th, right after his inauguration. February 9 and August 5 bring the others. In August, he could either broker a powerful peace treaty or need to deal directly with an important rival (perhaps even from within).

While Leos do like to reign supreme, it will take humility and teamwork for his presidency to succeed. "Yes We Can" should remain his guiding mantra. Transformational Pluto will be in Obama's sixth house of community service for his whole presidency, and he'll inspire people to heal the economy at a grassroots level. He should continuously visit neighborhoods, talk to locals, and remain "down with the people." Environmental issues are also favored by Pluto's placement. Obama could "turn the White House green" with eco-friendly energy sources, lighting and more.

Michelle Obama (Capricorn)
Her husband calls her "the rock," and it's no surprise. As a stable, rooted Earth sign, Capricorn women are often the backbones of their family—the consistent presence that holds everyone together. A wise money manager and practical Capricorn, she even shops at J.Crew! With her organized, no-nonsense nature, she can keep a dynamic Fire sign like Barack from getting carried away with Leo ego trips or half-baked plans.

Capricorn and Leo are five signs apart, making their natures completely different, yet complementary. As a team, they're unstoppable, as long as they balance their strengths. His showy Leo can play the charismatic frontman. With her Capricorn managerial flair, she can run the production from behind the scenes.

As First Lady, what will be her "pet" issue? With enthuiastic Jupiter in her second house of money and material resources all year, Michelle could tackle consumerism. She could encourage citizens to help repair the economy by pooling their resources and living with less. By 2010, she'll tap into the media—websites, blogs, books—to help organize communities for neighborhood activism. With powerful Pluto in Capricorn until 2024, she'll be a force of nature wherever she goes. (Could she, like Hillary, run for office next?)

In 2009, three eclipses will touch Michelle's sign: July 7 and 22, and December 31. These could be peak moments for her to shine as a First Lady—either on her own platform or by her husband's side. There might also be a family issue that demands her attention, too. Mercury will be retrograde until February 1, and her words could be misinterpreted. She might want to wait until February for any post-inauguration speeches or Barbara Walters interviews.

Malia Obama (Cancer)
Shy and soft-spoken, Malia is a typical Crab who prefers the safety of her "shell" to the limelight. True to her zodiac sign, she's close to her parents and has artistic talent. She may have a harder time adapting to White House life than her younger sister. Cancers get very sentimental about friends, home and family, and she may need a little extra attention from mom and dad when transitioning in and out. Cancers are deeply attached to their mothers, and Michelle will need to take extra care making sure she gives Malia quality time and nurturing.

Sasha Obama (Gemini)
With her dimples, mischievous manner and twinkling eyes, little Sasha is a textbook Gemini. The nonstop change and stimulation of White House life will thrill her, as Gemini is a restless sign that needs constant variety. She'll keep the family laughing, and will have lots of questions for her parents (Geminis are eternally curious). When the family chooses a White House pet, it will be largely Malia's playmate, as Geminis have a special bond with animals. Expect a cameo on Nickelodeon, a webcam tour of her quarters, even an illustrated children's book (co-authored with Mom) about a little girl's life in the White House. Move over, Eloise!
